Hi Group
We decided to shim our Shock Block. Added .505" of shims. Two 1/4" McMaster
Marine Plywood shims coated with Aeropoxy and one 1/16" Black PVC. The 1/4"
Marine Plywood was slightly undersized. Added two flat head #6 screws on
diagonal locations to hold shims in place. Drilled damper clearance holes with
1 3/8" hole saw. This gives 3.1" clearance between actuation plates with only
having to use the 3.1" distance bolts to compress Shock Block about .005".
Here's an interesting fact, if Shock Block is compressed where you have the
plane sitting 2" lower compared to having a full height Shock Block, the Main
wheel contact area is moved aft by about 3 fingers! That's about 2 1/4" more
aft.
That's just the sort of thing you want when heavily braking and swerving off
the runway pulling a lot of side G's to make that first turn!
No joking, turning while braking with a squatting Shock Block will make it
easier to decrease the diameter of your prop compared to a non squatting Shock
Block.
For those who haven't figured why a Mono will more easily nose over while
braking in a turn, it's because if you brake going straight, the main wheel
contact point is far forward. In a turn, you will begin loading the outboard
outrigger which has a contact area much more aft of the main wheel contact
area. Net is the front pivot contact area is moved more aft making a turn
compared to going straight. The more sideways G's you pull, the more aft the
contact area moves because the more G's you pull sideways, the more load you
will be putting on the more aft Outrigger.
Anyway, the more you squat, the more aft the contact area moves. Heavy and a
already compressed Shock Block would be the worst case for moving Main wheel
contact area aft.
