There is no real advantage in using a dry mix to fill.The weight saving will not
be significant and it won't sand any easier. Sounds like you have already found
some of the disadvantages.
The key to easy filler application has already been discribed here. Use Cabosil
with the micro and Ron Swinden's fishing line trick.
It takes two people two hours to completely fill one side of a wing. There
should be no need to refill because there won't be any low spots.
