In fact some people have removed the key rings from the pip pins and use a special tool to remove and replace the pins (all 4). Gernot Schwetz has the nicest one I've seen, you can positively check that the pins are properly locked in when in situ. The tool grips the barrel and has a central pushrod to release the pip pin.
