Patrick,

<< 2. Capacitance fuel gauges. I wish to fit two sender units in the tank with
an
access panel in the top of the seat back. Has anybody already done this? If
so
any chance of a sneak preview of their mod proposal to the PFA? Again any
guidance to avoid the pitfalls would be very much appreciated.

I fitted a capacitance sender into the top of my tank before it went into
the cockpit module. Have decided to post this mod to the list after being
asked a couple of times about it, but mod approval doesnt guarantee it will
always work- you will have to decide if you want to cut your tank!

Basically, a 25mm hole 390mm inboard from the tank side and 130mm from the
tank rear edge will clear the saddle and fuel strainer. If you have the
senders they come with a square alloy plate, predrilled and tapped for the
head to bolt onto. Now, the problem is, how do you get the plate inside the
tank?
send me a signed blank check and you get the answer.....

no, seriously, I cut the corners off the plate and filed the outside down
into a ring around 20mm wide. Place it over the fuel tank hole, mark
orientation on tank, and drill through the fitting holes carefully, then
remove the ring and make these holes in the tank slightly oversize.

so you have a 25mm hole and 5 small ones in the tank top. Now, cut the ring
and pull it into a helical shape, put a bolt in one of the end holes to hold
it and twist the ring inside the tank, lining it up with the predrilled holes.
DO NOT DROP IT ! now, screw all the bolts into the ring to pull it up against
the tank, then between the bolts drill 3 holes into the ring for some self
tappers. All these do is locate the ring in place, they are not connected with
the final assembly of sender to tank. Dont forget to make sure the self
tappers have their heads recessed. finally, bolt it up with flange and
sealant. Drill the bolt heads first so that they can be wire locked.

You will also have to re-inforce the cockpit module where you cut a hole to
work on the tank. 4 layers in total of 300mm square bid cloth pieces need
placing above and below your hole in the headrest section, but you may be able
to get away with it thrown on the top of the module if the tank is in place.
I made the access hole about 4 inches square, one edge against a headrest. If
you cant figure out the best way to re-inforce the hole, suggest a chat with
Europa.

If you can think of a better way feel free, otherwise follow these
instructions and quote Europa kit 67, project 247-12611, as the PFA has
approved my mod and even Alan was happy with it!
