Door Locks

Gidday,
I ask on behalf of a fellow builder who wants to fit door locks. I remember
reading something about using nylon lock ties placed around the shoot bolts
(or similar) to act as the securing for a locking mechanism. Can anyone
please help clarify this, and whether there is another option  to having to
cut fairly big holes in doors.
