In order to prevent vertical wing motion when trailering I regularly strap
outrigger mountings down to the trailer frame below. Something like this is
essential to stop the leading edge taking a pounding. Unfortunately the
vertical forces are then transferred to the hinge. Today the top plate of the
hinge fatigue-fractured neatly next to the weld to the vertical support i.e.
parallel to the hinge axis. While the straps prevented any serious departure,
either the plate of the hinge needs reinforcing or the base of the vertical
support needs to be bolted down regularly, rather than just pip-pinned.
