I believe you are referring to the tailplane. The radius serves only to
permit the cloth to drape over the edge without popping up, creating air
pockets. You can eye the radius like you say, and check it by draping a scrap
of bid (+/- 45) over the edge. It if lays down reasonably well dry, it will
be fine when wet.
