John,
At least in this country (UK) you can buy an SWR meter for just a few
pounds, which is not very more dollars. It's a passive device and you use
your radio, set to mid band, for the source. If you buy one, check the
meter works OK for the aviation band, around 125 MHz because most of the
cheap ones are used by the CB boys much lower down.
When you do the tuning, make sure the airplane is well away from
buildings, especially metal ones.
