I have noticed in the Aircraft Spruce catalog Type 302 spring wire 1.6 mm dia at

USD 0.27/ft. I think that this is what you were looking for for to fit your 
teflon hinge pin tube. You will probably have tostraighten it but this will not

be to difficult on 1.6 mm.

This is the stuff to use!
