Hi! Europaphiles with Jabiru 3300 inclinations !!!! Get your minds round
this :- any one into the wiring mode will need to do some pretty critical
planning . I'll keep you posted as it develops !!! better read it in
chronological order if you don't want a head ache !!!!

Further to my epistle dated 24th ......
The Jabiru Factory now have issued a warning that the" three phase
Stator and regulator may burn out UNLESS THE BROWN REGULATOR WIRE IS ONLY
CONNECTED TO POSITIVE WHEN THE ENGINE IS RUNNING" !" Applicable TO THE
STATOR also if it is connected to positive when IGNITION IS ON BUT ENGINE
NOT RUNNING."!!!!!
Further more I have established from them that if the engine is run without
the Brown connected (ie:- if your crowbar was wired to cut the bown wire) it
will trash the regulator !!!!!
When I asked them about overvoltage protection BY DISCONNECTING THE
REGULATOR FIELD (BROWN) THEY SAY
"SWITCH OFF ALTOGETHER " ( I presume they mean STOP THE ENGINE ! ...... so
now we are gliding along.......with no electrics because it is all turned
off for fear of burning out the stator......!!!!!!
I say bring back the old style adjustable contacts type regulator off my
1967 A.40 Farina or even my third brush dynamo off my 1936 KSS O/HEAD CAM
Velocette Mo'Bike.!!! And throw technology into the bin.!!!!
With all these constraints we can't even do a calibration check of the
crowbar unit unless it is done out of circuit , and we have to accept when
it activates we are making a choice of either ALTERNATOR/ REGULATOR
REPLACEMENT or AVIONICS.
WHAT SAY you ?
Can your OVERVOLTAGE crowbar GUISMO be used to disconnect only the AVIONICS
BUS BAR perhaps.?
Not forgetting I'm a bloody Bo Bo at electrics makes me feel I'm trying to
re-invent the wheel !
A quick reply would more than oblige since I'm trying to "get my show on
...... sorry IN THE AIR !

Hi! Bob.
I have a Jabiru3300 which I'm installing into a Europa.
The Alternator is of the permanent Magnet type(The Jabiru Manual describes
it as "permanently excited" their part No.Pl 12609N and with the number
SH548-12 ) printed on it.
9.9 )
It has three wires to the Regulator.
The regulator has connections inwards for these three wires. Then outwards
has three wires Brown Black and RED.
Their instructions are that the Black is connected to the Negative/earth.
Red is connected to the battery and BROWN is connected to positive "only
when ignition is on" ? This leads me to presume that the regulator is
activated by a field from the battery through the ignition switch?
I have asked them to confirm that their Alternator will not be damaged if
run without the brown connected but await a reply.
However , it occurs to Nigel Charles that your CROWBAR Protector could be
used to isolate the alternator in the event of runaway as if it were a
conventional field wound alternator thereby eliminating the need for a 30
amp continuous relay and breaker ?
Would you be able to advise on this question ? with only this sketchy
description ?. If this is correct we could publish the info' on the Jabiru
onelist internet circuit thereby opening up the possibility of a number of
Jabiru owners being protected.

Bob Harrison G-PTAG.
