this a 912....do you know if the 914 is similar?<

In fact I was wrong. What I meant to say was it took its reference from the
ignition control wires through a pair of capacitors. This is then used for
RPM indication. Engine hours are obtained from this by loading an assumed
cruise RPM. The uMonitor then counts revs divided by the cruise RPM to give
time. This is a similar principle to mechanical tachos used in RPM gauges.
This means that when the RPM is higher it overestimates and when lower
underestimates the time. You could say that this gives a better way of
assessing overall engine wear as in effect you are counting the number of
revolutions of the engine.

I have used this with a 912 as well as the hourmeters. It is highly likely
that the 914 will have the same system. Although I have still retained the
analogue RPM gauge (which is easier to use at a glance) the digital RPM
provided by the uMonitor should be much more accurate. This should prevent
inadvertant overspeeds without resorting to an optical RPM gauge.
