Gel coats work out heavier. Not a problem for gliders which carry water
ballast to increase their weight. They also deteriorate after about 20
years and require replacement of the gel coat at a cost of about GBP
6000. Some gliders are painted on top of an epoxy surface ( PIK and
Slingsby Vega for example).
