instrument panel markings

In an ideal world.... I'd like to placard swiches, lights etc with
letters directly on the paint, around 4mm in size. - preferably on a
positioning strip (ie made up) but alternatively as a paint mask. Anyone
seen anything like that? 

What I do want to avoid is letters on a clear background - I'd rather
paint engraving stock, and go that route.
