Hi John
I chose to cut out the panel face and fabricate an alum. face plate
which is then screwed in place. You can see photos of this mod on my
site at www.goflyin.com/europa and type instrument or panel into the
search engine. I would not rec. cutting into the fire wall for the
reasons you specified.
