We are required to check the accuracy of the mode c transponder every time you
are allocated a squawk.
You will be asked either to confirm or verify your level, which is asking you to
give a read back to the nearest 100 feet of the present level or a precise
report
as the aircraft passes through a level.
The controller is checking that the readout indicates 200 feet or less from the
level reported . If it is "verified" they will use the read out to provide
standard
separation and monitor any deviation from the cleared level.
However if the controller observes a discrepancy the pilot will be asked to
confirm
his altimeter setting and level. If the discrepancy remains, the pilot will
be instructed to switch off mode C. If independent switching of mode C is not
possible the pilot is to be instructed to select Code A0000.
