Good idea. Don worked at De Havilland for most of his life and they 
developed the brakes on the Vampire. Just like the trailing edge brakes on 
modern gliders.

However, if you have short wings you don't need brakes. The induced drag 
with flaps down is enough, especially with a bit of side slip
