My transponder manual says the antenna should be at least 5 feet from any 
organic
material (the crew!)

I have mine mounted about half way from the back bulkhead to the tail. It is 
internally
mounted - an $80 antenna designed for composite aircraft. IT was purchased
---From Aircraft Spruce. This is still untested.
