According to The Concise Oxford Dictionary, 6th Edition: "Solid, or hollow
inflated, rubber ring placed round wheel of vehicle to prevent jarring;
~-chain (fastening over tread of tyre to improve grip on ice etc.); ~-gauge,
portable device for measuring air-pressure in tyre."
