Door Handle Lock Open Latch

 I am in the process of trying to make a latch which will prevent the door
handle being pushed to the closed position unless the door is firstly
closed.

Am I reinventing the wheel?

If anybody has successfully done this before, I would be very appreciative
of any available photos of the mechanism and or description of the method so
adopted.
