Alan,
Two plates go on the double rib - one each side - the inner one on the inner
side, and the outer one on the outer side. There's recesses moulded in the
rib for them. The exact separation of the ribs (they're on flox beds) is
ensured by the W21's you put between them when laying up.
One plate goes on the intermediate rib as shown in the manual. It goes on
the side that does not have a flange running onto the lower skin (so on one
wing it is on the inner side, on the other it is on the outer side - this
bit is crystal clear as soon as you look at the wings, much easier than
explaining).
Set the plates for the double rib first as instructed in the manual, butting
up to the closeout. Then sight along the lower skin to align the middle
plate exactly in line from the root plate to the double-rib plates. You may
find the double rib is not perpendicular to the spar, hence the plates there
appear fractionally shorter when you sight down the wing - just make the
offset fore and aft equal.
In practice I found I had loads of room for manoeuvre when I fitted my flaps
- having set the plates to about a half-millimetre accuracy. In reality on
my wings and flaps I had quite a few mm to play with. After worrying away
about the flap-fitting exercise for some time, it turned out to be very
straightforward. In fact I'm not entirely happy with the positioning on one
flap and reckon I can do a better job (I was tired, it was late, usual
story), but redoing it will simply be a case of using a new set of
W19/W20/W21s and drilling through my existing holes in the W18s.
The W18s are quite a fun layup to do - much nicer than the rib
reinforcements at the root - enjoy!
Regards,
Jeremy

> I'm just starting the wings and am trying to figure out the W18 flap
plates(they mount in the wings). The manuel says to see the pictures on 8-14
of the manuel which shows the 2 outer plates placement but not the inner
plate. Also it show's the outer plate on the inner side of the outer rib but
says in the instructions to place the plate on the outer side of the outer
rib. does anyone remember where the plates went? I'm finding the manuel a
little ambigious on some of its instructions.
