John,
        Did mine that way about three years or so ago.  It provides the
best way to get in the back either on your belly or back.  I trimmed away
a bit on each side near the cross board so when I was on my belly I could
get my arms in a more vertical mode.  The end which is in the cockpit has
a vertical board that is cut to match the tunnel so the board doesn't
move around.  The board is adjusted in height to just clear the bottom of
the "D" opening.
