---From what I have heard, this is true of permanently installed ELTs.  It
would seem however, that a portable ELT on your person is a much better
deal.  Eg,  if one survives an accident, what good is an ELT in a
burning or sinking aircraft ??  I will be purchasing a portable unit
when/if the time ever arrives.
