I seem to recall a Piper Cub I flew once had a ball in the sight tube, but
this may have been larger diameter. I do find that the fuel level can be
difficult to see in certain light conditions and I feel something of this
nature would be a great asset.

Someine gave me a little red ball to mark the fuel level but I was told not
to use it with mogas (or was it avgas?), as it would get saturated and
sink.
Worth enquiring.
