Thanks for the input. Two "gotchas" have been brought to my attention,
fortunately before first flight (which unfortunately is not imminent) .
Being an analog guy in a digital world I made the erroneous assumption that
solid state relays don't care about waveform. OOPS. Worse yet, I missed
the fact that starter current is just a tad higher than the steady state
cruise load. "Lectric Bob's remotely operated battery switch (9042-100) is
looking like a really good device for my purposes.

Rob,
Are you actually using this relay? I suspect it isn't suitable for a DC load
(if you look at the laod terminal it says "AC" ). It probably uses a triac
as the control element - which depends on the voltage reaching zero to
switch off.
