Keith,
The new mufflers occasionally get very close as yours has. I've had to
modify two cowls in the shop. My problem is usually with the motor
mount placement and cowl fit. The farther aft the cowl, the closer the
exhaust. I have gotten away with moving the cowl to the starboard once
but don't count on being that lucky. Take care you don't force it out
of alignment and cause an exhaust leak.
My solution is to cut a hole and take the intake bump on the port side
and extend it to the 914 cowl bulge for the round muffler. It's a half
day job over a weekend. Cut the cowl, add foam to contour. Glass the
outside, let cure, cut out the foam, and glass the inside. Put firewall
material (aluminum/stainless with heat barrier between, sold at Aircraft
Spruce for a fortune) then finish.

Hello all,
The silencer (muffler) on my XS / 912 uls (the new oval section
silencer) sits forward of the moulded recess in the cowl. The front of
the silencer is touching the cowl on the outboard side, forward of the
recess. The straight outlet pipe from the silencer would exit several cm
above the moulded recess. The silencer could not move any further back,
as it has only a few mm clearance from the bottom attachment of the ring
mount. Photo attached.
I presume this is a result of having the oval section silencer instead
of the round section one. Have others had this problem, and if so what
have you done?
