I tried using auto hose clamps ( but not the spring clamps you
mention ) in an attempt to trace the fuel smell.
There was no leakage at the connections so it did not make any
difference.
The smell always seemed like vented autogas, and as soon as I changed
the vent from the top of the fuselage and plumbed
it back into the neck of the tank, the smell disappeared.
Odd as it may seem, I think the smell came from vented gas running
down the fuselage and being sucked back inside via the
cut outs for the flaps and elevator
