Just on the subject of belt drives, one of the australian builders of
scale spitfires and mustangs now too i believe. they use a tooth belt drive
on 350hp V8 engines to stop any harmonic issues arrising between engine and
prop this may be a good soulution to the issue, but will require a bit more
engineering than direct drive, or gearbox i suggest.

Not that I know anything about the subject, but several Cherry builders
in NL have been flying with BMW boxer engines for quite a few years.
