I did this mod almost 20 years ago and I don't have any photos. Of course the
recesses
in my tunnel sides are now covered with dark fabric and don't show well
in a photo.
Only two points to make. I don't think it's necessary to cut recesses into the
tunnel which remove the top edges of the tunnel. My recesses look similar to
your
proposals, but stop about an inch below the top edges, thereby retaining that
extra bit of tunnel strength. This doesn't compromise the increased comfort
afforded to your hips.
Having completed the concave recesses in the foam and done the lay-ups in the
hollows,
while progressively rubbing away blue foam on the other side I would determine
the depth of foam still needing to be removed by occasionally pushing
a thin needle through the foam until it touched the concave layup and thus
served
as a depth gauge.
