Hi All
I did the 13070 mod on G-WUFF about three years ago using an aluminium
pipe bent in 2 places. At the same time I moved the filler opening aft
so that the filler remained behind the baggage bay rear bulkhead as I
installed the baggage bay enlargement mod. The pipe was supplied by the
late Neville Eyre. I don't know who made it for him. At both ends I used
short flexible pipe unions to filler and fuel tank respectively. These
are sections of Gates wire reinforced hose supplied by Car Builder
Solutions. Fuel tank sealant from LAS and clamps were also used. In my
opinion an important feature is an additional aluminium clamp around the
pipe were it passes through the baggage bay rear bulkhead. This prevents
the pipe migrating aft and losing its seal with the fuel tank inlet
spigott. I had no problems with fuel smells in the cockpit once this was
installed. The fuel tank is kept fairly full so I expect the lower
unions to have been exposed to mogas/air mix quite a bit. The fuel
filters have not shown evidence if any material deterioration. Fuel
actually has to run uphill as it runs forwards in the pipe (WUFF is a
mono). This does not seem to cause any problem with filling.
I have just disassembled it with some difficulty. The inside of the
aluminium pipe and Gates hose look just the same as they did when I
fitted it.
Neville knew that the rubber filler pipes were lifed items and did post
messages on this site offering to source replacements.
