Graeme,

You will have fun with that project.

I helped a couple of mono owners and found the Classic Cowl and firewall fo
rward to be acceptable.

Seal up the radiator around the opening, install a cold air plenum, and it
was fine.

In Florida I was more concerned about overheating on climb out as the 80 HP
original design had hot radiator and engine heated air to feed on. Also t
he cowl exits caused the cowl pressure to be a low pressure area at 90 KIAS
.

So I did the following:

The bottom of the cowl exit was opened up to allow a greater exit area. La
ter a cowl flap was added but the fixed exit area was not decreased.

The corners of the cowl inlet around the radiators were sealed pretty well.
We also fabricated a cold air inlet for the carbs although the Europa ful
l cold air plenum or similar can easily be made. The shorter distance betw
een the engine and firewall cramps the cold air plenum a bit but can be wor
ked. No engine plenum was used.

With a constant speed prop, climb is acceptable at over 500 fpm.

Cruise is right about 125-135 KTAS at 7500-9500 MSL

Overcooling with the larger fixed exit ramp will be an issue. I have alway
s preferred a movable cowl flap. You don=92t get any speed out of the cowl
flap but it allows more draw out of the cowl for climb.

If the engine is equipped with the old T shaped muffler, it is very heavy a
nd restrictive. It will cost a few bucks but a new CKT exhaust is pretty g
ood. Creighton Smith cut off the third leg of the silencer and extended th
e tail pipe from the horizontal portion remaining. It is a bit more two cy
cle sounding, but lighter. That stupid aft end of the muffler severely blo
cks the back exit of the original cowl exit. Some in the States put spacer
s under the lower cowl to stretch it out. Probably OK in a cold climate bu
t I would put in a moveable cowl flap with a cut down muffler without any o
ther ducting.

Contact Creighton Smith for performance numbers if you like. Here is a com
ment he made to me and on the list:

=93We are finally having a bit of summer and I climbed to 7500 (density 900
0) and tried some wot leaned runs at a couple of altitudes. At 9000da spee
d stabilized @128 ktas and @7800@132 ktas. This with the cowl flap closed
which makes a slight (2-3kt) difference.

Speaking of classic cooling issues, I found some felt weather strips of abo
ut an inch wide and glued them to the cowling (on the inside so it doesn=92
t look like the dogs dinner) after measuring the gaps between the cowling l
ips and the radiators. Boy does that work! I can climb @ 85kt to 3000 ft
and cruise climb @ 95 kt pretty much forever. I=92m going to try the glyco
l restrictor but have not acquired it yet.=94

Creighton does not use an oil cooler, he uses a Lenovo water to oil heat ex
changer. He also installed a HAC Man leaning kit to improve efficiency at
higher altitudes. We rigged a heater off the starboard radiator and found
it was barely adequate in winter. Heated motorcycle suits did work well up
in Canada. 96EG is a cute and very light aircraft. 80HP Mono Classics ar
e so light they are actually enjoyable to land. Well worth the time.

Subject: Europa-List: Re: Who has Nev's cowlings

Looks like I am about to start on completing another aged part built kit wh
ich has an 912 and original cowl, engine mount and exhaust system. Any comm
ents on this set up appreciated.
Will cooling be an issue? Can it be fixed with additional rads etc. My curr
ent 912S and XS FWFWD runs too cool for 95% of the year. When I was buildin
g my first classic I was recommended to go XS and brought a new cowl, and e
ngine mount but then I hadn't purchased them yet.

What about Nev's cowl and mount - would that have substantial advantages?
Looks like removing the lower cowl on the old classic means removing radiat
ors or at least the attachment bolts.

The kit currently as a brand new radio K97A and transponder Garmin GX320; i
s there anywhere in the world where they would still be useful?
