Pete, Sorry to hear about the possible expense (I know the feeling). You can thank Phil Lockwood for that hint. He told me it is a very common issue if the gearbox is old, and not properly rebuilt. Low friction torque? Dunno. I was always told that if your gearbox has low friction you can easily tell (very noisy).
