This week involved a trip to the field where the left hand hatch was opened to
grab some recording gear to try out the new gopro; then a trip backhome. Weather
has not been great for enjoyable flying.
In the shed I sat down with the semi dismantled 914 and thought about the seized
wastegate and gave a slight sigh as I decided to pull the alternator bell off
and bring that back to operational standard. Then attention was turned back
to the wastegate. So with a mighty 14" shifter I once again set forth to put
some wiggles onto the actuator arm without snapping the shaft; I was not hopeful
knowing the unit had sat idle for some 20 years or so. After a few goes with
some tension and a few months soaking in Rostoff and diesel the shaft presented
a tiny click; which was very exciting, and enough to inspire an hour of gentle
patient work freeing the rest of the crud off to end with a perfectly operating
wastegate once more.
Next task will be dressing up the valve seats on the cylinder heads and fitting
a new set of valve springs.
