So after doing some initial thinking and letting the vault of forgotten
knowledge murmur mumbles to me about "sintered bronze bushes" I decided to
explore why I have been looking at LG08 and LG07 thinking "those bushes are way
too small for that task"... So what happens within these moments? Area-51
happens...
Today the big switch to power up the laboratory was thrown over to the "ON"
position and the FEA work began with formulating and testing another digital
model of the Mono undercarriage; focusing on the oilite bushes.
Surprise surprise... Both LG08 and LG07 bushes both failed FEA stress testing
at just 1G with a 550kg AUW. In contrast LG05 bushes passed 1G stress testing
through to 3G loading. The assembly was stressed to 4G to assess material
requirements.
Conclusion: incorrect material choice for component sizing resulting in
accelerated failure. However they have lasted for 800 landings over a 25 year
period... Will be opting for either C86400/300 manganese bronze instead of
sintered bronze.
