I decided to transport the airplane myself and save a bundle on the crating and shipping costs. I was told that the crating cost alone is about $700. I could do the whole thing for less than that. On the morning of Dec 18/2000 I flew down to Tampa. Europa sales manager Jim Thursby met me at the airport. After treating me to a fantastic shrimp lunch he drove me to the Lakeland Uhaul office. I had requested for a 24 ft Uhaul truck. Due to the wisdom of others who have gone before me, I knew that a 16 ft truck would not be sufficient because of the way Uhaul measures their trucks. We also got a dozen furniture blankets, packing tape and rope. I had never driven a truck that big before. Fortunately, the most difficult part of the trip was the drive to the Europa office through the narrow streets of downtown Lakeland. Loading the truck did not take more than a couple of hours. We tied the wings, fuselage and all the boxes to the rails so that they won't shift around. By 5pm I was ready to drive back. The return trip was uneventful. With two overnight stops in Gainsville, FL and Knoxville, TN, I was home two days and 1000 miles later. The truck was noisy as hell, and very hard on my ears. It was also a rough ride. Despite what Uhaul claims about "comfort ride", the truck leaped into the air every time it hit the smallest bump on the road. I had to keep the speed down to 55 mph afraid that it might become airborne. It did not dawn on me until much later that this was probably due to the lack of weight. The truck is rated for something like 18,000 lb. The Europa weighs nothing. It was like driving an empty truck. I don't think the suspension is designed to work at such light weights. Cost = $450 (truck rental) + $150 (fuel) + $100 (air fare) + $100 (motel and meals) = $800.
