With a single gauge in the "main" side you can still read the reserve by
switching over when the level reaches the main side reserve quantity,
switching back when the that side is used or nearly used, (based on time, as
the reading will not change). You should always have landed before then
anyway, switching to the (full) reserve as part of the landing checks for
safety. This is the same as starting switched to "reserve", then preserving
reserve quantity in the main, where the gauge can read it. Anyone still
