Graeme,

Alodine's a yellow/green liquid primer which chemically etches into a bare
(ie. not anodised) aluminium surface.  It provides a very good key for a
subsequent undercoat or final coat.  It also provides reasonable temporary
protection on its own.

Supply in France is a bit specialist but you could try the following
(you'll need to add the 1997 area codes in front, my data's old!)

Protection Industrielle et Chimique, Le Havre, 35 26 44 26

Il s'appelle "aludinage" en francais.

I thought you were coming home.
