I've received today the following invitation and press release. I
hope the Europa Club Committee will find time to consider the
invitation at the committee meeting on 9th December (BEFORE the
Christmas dinner!), but I thought others might wish to know of the
event, and perhaps indicate their interest in participating. Hope the
weather will be better than the PFA had for the last Rally held at
Wroughton!

THE FIFTH GREAT VINTAGE FLYING WEEKEND
THE ONLY UK FLY-IN HELD SPECIFICALLY FOR VINTAGE AND CLASSIC BRITISH AEROPLANES
WROUGHTON, WILTS, 12TH & 13TH MAY 2001
29th November 2000
Dear Mr Carson
CLUB INVITATION
You will probably be aware that our fifth annual Great Vintage Flying
Weekend will take place at the Science Museum's airfield at
Wroughton, near Swindon, on May 12th & 13th 2001.
In the past we have received several enquiries requesting a facility
to assemble Club members and their aircraft on the ground as a Club
Fly-In within the event as a whole. However, this has generally
proved difficult to arrange for two reasons, a lack of space on the
various airfields and the practical problems of marshalling visiting
aircraft into pre-allotted spaces at various times on each day.
However, this next year I hope we may be able to go some way towards
arranging Club parking areas for those of your members who would like
to be featured in this prestige weekend as a Club Fly-In.
As you will appreciate, our organising team can become fully
stretched looking after several hundred aircraft - from non-radio
types to wandering DC-3s! - so, while we would be delighted to host
your Club en masse, we would welcome any help you can give us in
advance.
For example: naturally, some members (or non-members flying an
aircraft type appropriate to your Club) would prefer, on receipt of
their invitations, to pre-register individually with us as usual and
turn up on the day; we would then do our best to direct them to the
Club area if that's what they wished. But others might suggest that
the Club could perhaps oversee some sort of arrangement for a group
of members to meet up somewhere and then arrive together. We would be
pleased to go along with this concept, but would appreciate hearing
---From an Official in the Club well in advance the numbers likely to be
attending, and therefore the space likely to be required. It goes
without saying that aircraft arriving together are much easier to
marshal into a designated park, and conflicting taxi-paths with other
individual visitors are more easily avoided.
If you think that the idea is worth exploring, and that your members
might enjoy being part of one of Europe's largest vintage aircraft
Fly-Ins (with its 'garden party' atmosphere), please can you let me
know as soon as possible, as we are already working on various
aspects of the event. I would even appreciate a "No, thanks!" if that
is the way things are, so we know how we stand.
There will be NO landing fees or charges for the Club park, so it's a
free day out with the added bonus of all the other aircraft on the
field, sponsors' and trade stands, full facilities for the interested
public, and unlimited access to the National Civil Aviation
Collection which will be opened specially for the weekend. That said,
any donation that the Club felt able to offer would be greatly
appreciated; as I'm sure you can understand, the costs of hiring such
a prestigious venue and providing the whole Air Traffic and Safety
infrastructure is quite substantial.
I look forward to hearing from you shortly and personally welcoming
your Club to G-VFWE 2001. If you would like to see a copy of last
year's programme for Thruxton, just say and I'll forward one to you.
Yours sincerely,
Peter Campbell

THE FIFTH GREAT VINTAGE FLYING WEEKEND
THE ONLY UK FLY-IN HELD SPECIFICALLY FOR VINTAGE AND CLASSIC BRITISH AEROPLANES
WROUGHTON, WILTS, 12TH & 13TH MAY 2001
PRESS RELEASE
For this, our fifth staging, we are pleased to announce that the 2001
Great Vintage Flying Weekend will be held on the 12th & 13th May 2001
at Wroughton Airfield, Wiltshire. This is the first time in nearly a
decade that the Science Museum's airfield at Wroughton has hosted a
major air event, and we are very grateful to the management of the
Science Museum for granting us the use of the airfield.
Although this annual Fly-In is held primarily for the owners and
operators of British-built classic and vintage aircraft, anyone
flying any type of aircraft of any size is invited to attend and will
be very welcome. The intention is to re-create once again the
informal "garden party" atmosphere of some fifty years ago.
At the end of 2000 invitations will be sent out to several hundred
individuals already on our data base and also to all the classic and
vintage aeroplane clubs. Any pilots or owners who would like to
attend but who have not received a personal invitation by the end of
the first week in January 2001 can obtain one from Peter Campbell of
Cirrus Associates (details below) and their addresses will entered on
the database for future years.
If pilots and owners pre-register their intention to attend with
Cirrus Associates as early as possible, it not only helps the
organisers greatly in the planning of the event, it also benefits
those attending, as all those who pre-register will pay no landing
fee. Otherwise visiting aircraft not pre-registered will pay 5 for
singles and 12 for twins.
The 2001 event will be on a somewhat larger scale than in previous
years, as befits an airfield the size of Wroughton, but we are
confident that our informal atmosphere can be retained. A new book
---From Cirrus Associates will be launched at the event, as is the
custom, and many copies will be available free to participating
pilots. Three prizes will be awarded daily in a sealed landing time
competition, all the times being before 11.00 local time to encourage
early arrivals! The concours competition will be run over both days
and the awards will be presented on the Sunday afternoon. Other
features will include pleasure flying and a large range of Trade &
Club stands. We are again negotiating to secure sponsorship from the
Met. Office, whose presence with their Display Unit - and possibly
their Hercules weather aircraft - will be of special interest to all
our visitors. A number of other events are also being planned.
Visitors by road will be very welcome and free overnight camping &
caravanning facilities will be available. The entrance fee (which
includes car parking) will be as follows: adults 6 each, or car with
all occupants 15; this will cover admission on both days as well as
allowing free access to the museum's aircraft collection. A
reduced-price weekend pass (for car and all occupants) will cost just
10 and will be available in advance only from the Operations Office
(address below); cheques should be made payable to "Vintage Flying
Weekend."
