UK only - just to bring you up to speed on FMD
I am in the middle of lambing 4,500 sheep in Wales
and very much involved with current events which are:
Confidential. Extract from: FMD UPDATE 31
CONFIRMED & SUSPECT CASES (09/03/01)
As of this morning there are 107 confirmed cases throughout the UK. In
Wales, there are now 5 confirmed cases, following an additional case this
morning near Presteigne. There are 15 suspect cases - 11 Anglesey, 1
Montgomeryshire, 1 Brecon & Radnor, 1 Monmouth & 1 Newport.
ANIMALS
As of last night, a total of 74,132 animals had been slaughtered with a
further 18,107 awaiting slaughter.
The Chief Veterinary Officer has said that the crisis is likely to last "a
long time" and this is probably reinforced with a flurry of
confirmed cases over the last couple of days.
It is a critical situation for all livestock & dairy farmers. Those 4,500
sheep above are not allowed to be moved although they have already
increased by giving birth to some 1100 extra lambs. These are dying of
starvation at an alarming rate. Anything that might reduce the very rapid
spread that we are seeing of the disease (viz over-flying) has to be a good
idea. We are still having difficulty stopping the public walking across
our fields. Over 60 were counted climbing our mountain last weekend -
"because it was too nice a day to stay cooped up indoors!!"

PS please don't deluge me with emails. I don't have time!
