Dear Ken, If the bearing is kept from swivelling too much, you shold find that a quick rattle of the flap would be enough to enable the pin to engage. Without the restriction on rotation, usually the bearing swivels around to block the pin from entering altogether. Perhaps there is another reason for your difficulty?
