There must be an explanation for this.
One possibility could be slight corrosion in the pins & sockets at the
rear of the tacho - reversing the connection might re-make the
contact. This could be confirmed if the flickering does not return if
the wires are reversed again back to their original state - has anyone
tried this?
However, Mark says that even a new tacho made no difference so maybe
some other explanation? Maybe the flickering could be due to
electromagnetic or electrostatic induction in one of the signal leads to
the tacho - this could be confirmed if the fault disappears after the
wiring is twisted throughout its run (suggest 1 twist per inch) -
equalising any induction in both wires and cancelling it out.
Black magic otherwise!

All good advice I'm sure but the swapping wires cure really works. It
sounds bizarre but it worked for me. What was really weird is that my
tacho had worked quite happily for some years before it started
flickering. Changing the tacho made no difference and only swapping the
wires cured the problem.
