 Hi Gary,
I think the suggestion about wire mesh and an external antenna is exactly
what a tech who works on metal aircraft would say reflexly, but not based 
on actual
knowledge of composite aircraft. 
I would guess polarization would be a place to look. Comm antennae perform 
best 
in vertical orientation whereas Nav prefers horizontal.
If you really want to try the copper ground, it should be about a 1/4 
wavelength in radius.
Use copper foil from Skycraft and you will save weight.
