Andrew,

By all means, maintain a consistent 3-5mm gap between the flap leading 
edge and the vertical portion of the wing closeout; I used doubled up 
tongue depressors taped at each hinge point. As Jim sez, use a string 
line or straight edge for final trimming of the trailing edge of the 
aileron (or flap) to avoid "the slight misfit" and it will all be good.
