Hi William,
Nothing to do with the UK CAA or the LAA being obsessive. The LAA
standard mod was originally developed by Ian Rickard when he was the
Europa Club Mods expert. When the first few aircraft were modified
(including mine) we discovered that some of the nose legs had uprights
that were not at right angles to the pivot. This caused one of the
springs to foul the upright very badly. The fix was to cut off the
upright, replace it with a smaller diameter tube and weld it back in an
upright position. This fix was approved by the LAA and, I think,
subsequently adopted by Europa Ltd.

Subject: Europa-List: Spring for bungee Conversion
Recently I visited Bud and very instructive it was too, thanks Bud. I
recommend it.
For the spring conversion the factory says that the springs rub against
the upright (the upright that has the bump stop on the top against the
frame) on the nose gear leg assembly and therefore you have to modify
the nose gear upright or get a new nose gear assembly. Bud said not to
worry about that and indeed I saw a plane in his shop in which the
springs were contacting the upright.
What is the general experience? Do I need to modify nose gear or is it
just the UK CAA being obsessive?
many thanks Will
