Hi all;
Thanks so much for the lively discussion. Although it may have been repetitive
and boring to some of you remember, there are hundreds like me building or
builder-wannabes
that are looking to you "veterans" for advice, input, and direction.
Also I've been on this board for a year and a half now and don't recall
seeing the debate in that time period.
I've decided to stay with the mono-wheel and not upgrade to the tri-gear.
Probably
my biggest deciding factor was hearing that the mono wheel in Bishop, CA
last year having trouble getting off the ground had a 912S engine.... mine will
have the 914. Other factors in my decision: I can get it in my garage easier
since it will have a lower overall height on the trailer; the beauty and
uniqueness
of the mono wheel; the lower initial cost and lower building time of
the mono wheel (I probably won't buy hull insurance so the difference in
insurance
costs I expect to be negligible); The lower height of the mono wheel should
make it a bit easier to get in/out of (my knees hurt!); extra maintenance on
the tri gear with the short life of the tires. That's about it. By the way,
I'm a 500 hour instrument rated pilot with 25 hours of taildragger time- it's
all I rent since buying the monowheel- yes it does take more proficiency to
land taildraggers!
Now, anyone got a spiffy paint design for the mono wheel I can use?
