I can't offer any strong opinion, Roger, but carb ice seems likely. Have
you tried leaving the "choke" full open until the engine warms a little
before opening the throttle. In fact it isn't a "choke", it's a starting
carburettor and needs the throttle completely closed while starting. I
guess you knew that?
You could also try it with the cowling off and look for carb ice , did you
see the photograph Nigel Beale emailed a while ago? IF you can confirm ice
the cure is carb heat, provided by Nigel Beale's mod.
