I wouldn't discount the possibility that the electrolytic capacitor
itself was the problem, or a concurrent one. Neither Rotax nor Europa
state what quality this thing should be, and infant mortality is a
possibility. The waveform it has to contend with is not what many
such caps are designed for, and installing it in a hot, vibrating
engine compartment doesn't help either, if one reads typcial mfr's
Application Notes. Add'l capacitance will do hardly anything and even
hurt, but derating it to 35-40 volts is extra insurance.
