Plus small air leaks due to bad joints or porous pipes, these only cause a
problem at low fuel levels, when the pump is working hard. Because of the
often present smell of fuel tiny leaks aren't noticed except when bubbles
appear in the fuel viewed through transparent fuel line used for checking.
The volume of the bubbles at reduced pressure displaces fuel and thus
reduces pump delivery.
